  15. A Bombmaker Who Got Away

  17. <p>    Recriminations keep dogging the tragedy of Pan Am Flight
  18. 103, which blew up last December over Lockerbie, Scotland,
  19. killing 270. Britain's Ministry of Transport came under fire for
  20. having failed to respond soon enough to terrorist bomb threats
  21. against U.S. airliners. Last week West German officials were
  22. embarrassed by charges that Bonn may have fumbled a chance to
  23. prevent the bomb from being smuggled onto the plane.

  25. <p>    The West German weekly Stern charged that Marwan Khreesat,
  26. a Jordanian expert in barometric explosives, was arrested in
  27. West Germany six weeks before the Lockerbie disaster, along with
  28. 15 other suspected terrorists. Fourteen, including Khreesat,
  29. were released for lack of evidence. Stern said it had learned
  30. that Khreesat had been recruited as an informant for West
  31. German intelligence, implying that was the reason he was let go.
  32. Though American officials have reportedly confirmed the story,
  33. the Bonn government flatly denied it.
